Veggies in Space: A Lesson in the Power of Sharing!

I have included affiliate links below. When you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this site and our sponsorship of our Compassion child, Samson!

Grab your kids and head to your nearest Christian bookstore or retailer because there’s a brand new Veggie Tales available today {or stay in the comfort of your home and pre-order from Amazon – whatever suits you!}

Veggies in Space: The Fennel Frontier is the latest masterpiece from Big Idea, this time with an emphasis on the importance of sharing and lots of references to some of your favorite sci-fi flicks!

A Lesson in The Power of Sharing! Join Captain Cuke (Larry the Cucumber) and his loyal first officer, Mr. Spork (Bob the Tomato), as they embark on an out of this world adventure to bravely travel where no Veggie has ever been. The entire USS Applepie’s crew takes on Luntar the Looter, a power stealing space pirate, but they’re in for a big surprise when they find out what’s motivating him!

Veggie Tales always blends a wonderful message with great humor for all, and Veggies in Space does this so well! The boys and I were just in stitches over all of the Star Trek and Star Wars characters and references integrated into this movie! And I don’t have to tell you that all things space made this a big hit with my house of boys!

The Bible verse that wraps up this lesson on sharing is…

Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.Luke 3:11

The veggies use a fun play on words to illustrate the sharing of tunics in the movie – you’ll have to catch that! This is such an important verse to keep as a constant reminder in our homes where we almost always have plenty. We’re using this verse as we do some spring cleaning, sharing the more-than-enough toys and clothes with those who have little or none. Watch the movie with your kids and then gather up donations for a local homeless shelter! And check out the family discussion guide to process the movie and its great lessons afterward.

I am loving the fact that Veggie Tales is including a great song from a popular Christian artist at the end of each DVD! On Veggies in Space, it’s from Jamie Grace and it continues the sharing theme of the movie!

Veggie Tales has TONS of resources to go along with Veggies in Space! Your kids can even build their own spaceship! Check out the Veggies in Space Pinterest board for coloring pages, recipes, activities, and more!

Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye

Let’s face it: there aren’t a lot of family friendly dramas on TV anymore. I remember several good ones growing up, but they have mostly disappeared in favor of crime shows, zombie shows, and reality TV.

That’s why I was so pleased to learn of a TV series that ran on the PAX Network and is now available on DVD that the boys and I are all enjoying! It’s called Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye…

Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye is the critically acclaimed family favorite series inspired by the remarkable true story of Sue Thomas, a profoundly deaf woman whose unique lip reading ability lands her on the F.B.I.’s elite surveillance team. Starring Deanne Bray (“Heroes”), this groundbreaking original drama takes you on a witty, heart-warming, fast-paced ride. Tackling tough cases while catching the eye of handsome Agent Jack Hudson (Yannick Bisson), Sue and her hearing dog Levi are suddenly ‘G-men’ on the adventure of a lifetime!

The combination of the boys call “spy work” and the cute dog make it a win for them, and I appreciate the storylines that include F.B.I. work alongside faith and strong values. Friendship and honesty are highly emphasized. And the fact that it is based on a true story is even more compelling!

All five seasons of Sue Thomas, F.B.Eye are available on DVD now, and I have a free shipping code to offer you good through November 27, 2013!

Your free shipping code is:

Merry Larry & the True Light of Christmas!

I have included affiliate links below. When you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this site and our sponsorship of our Compassion child, Samson!

I am a sucker for Christmas movies, and even though we usually wait until after Thanksgiving to get out all things Christmas, we had good reason to watch a Christmas movie together as a family last week!

Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas is the newest Veggie Tales Christmas movie and it was a holiday hit with all of us!

Merry Larry & the True Light of Christmas is a fun story of a couple of veggies hired to decorate a mall for Christmas. In the process of dreaming up decor and decking the halls, they lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas until a little girl and an elf named Larry show them what is truly important.

We all gave the movie two thumbs up, but I’ll let the boys each tell you why they loved it so much…

I liked the movie so much because I liked that Si Robertson is in it! And I liked that he said, “That’s a fact, Jack!” I liked when the “yellow guy” put up the lasers in the mall. I liked that they all learned what Christmas is really about. ~Big J

I liked that there is a TobyMac song at the end! I loved the “starburst in a box!” I learned Christmas is a great time to help people! ~Little J

I also greatly enjoyed the character of Silas the Narrator, played by Duck Dynasty’s Si Roberston. He was a great storyteller and brought some fun sayings and humor to the story! The focus on helping others in the story was very clear and impacting to our whole family.

And yes, the music at the end was awesome! Veggie Tales has really had some great music to go with their latest DVDs, including Newsboys performing The League of Incredible Vegetables theme and Owl City + TobyMac with “The Light of Christmas” song at the end of Merry Larry!

Veggie Tales has all sorts of great extras to go with Merry Larry, including a $3 off coupon to use at a retailer near you, coloring sheets {#1, #2, #3}, and two fun crafts to do together here and here!

Not of This World {+ Love Dare for Parents Check-In}

He came to save the world so let us be in it, not of it. ~Avalon

This has always been one of my favorite Avalon songs. I was reminded of it again as I watched Lisa Chan’s latest True Beauty film, Not of This World.

TNoTW_Banners_125x125he True Beauty films have been so inspirational to me. Great messages, beautifully put together, real stories of real women growing through life’s challenges. Not of This World is the last installment in the True Beauty series and it follows well in the footsteps of its predecessors.

Lisa leads us through a reflection on our place in this world using Scripture, her own personal experiences, and the story of a woman discovering the unimportance of stuff and the heart of choosing Jesus over the world.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ~Matthew 6:19-21

Early on in the film, Lisa talks about the things of this world easily capturing our hearts and distracting us from our relationship with God. This really hit home for me. I have always considered God to be my treasure, but I AM so easily distracted from my time with Him and really following Him – social media, TV, and so on.

“Lift your eyes to Jesus. Everything in this world pales in comparison to Him and eternal life with Him.” ~Lisa Chan

Between this inspiring film and The Love Dare for Parents this week, I think God was sending me a message for myself AND to share with the boys. Lisa shared, “We will feel in opposition to the world and that is OK!’ Just earlier that same day I had read the following statement in The Love Dare:

“We must never forget that by encouraging our children to walk with God, we are asking them to intentionally travel against the cultural tide.”

When I choose to treasure things of this world over Jesus, I’m not the only one affected. My children are watching everything I do, and they must know where my heart finds joy.

The Love Dare for that day talked about rejoicing in the truth when our children make choices that are in line with Scripture. I love this reminder about how powerful our witness and our words are to our kiddos…

Rejoicing with them in the things of God is far more important and life-changing than rejoicing over worldly accomplishments. I am so thankful for the perspective shift that came from this and the Not of This World film this week!

If you’re looking for an inspirational DVD to share with a women’s group, Bible study, or group of friends, I highly recommend the True Beauty films. Each one has spoken powerfully to me and I know you will find great encouragement in them as well!

What things of this world distract you from your relationship with Jesus? How do you show your kids to be “not of this world?”

MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle! {Veggie Tales Movie Night}

I have included affiliate links below. When you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this site and our sponsorship of our Compassion child, Samson!

It’s a day that brings great joy to our house: the day a new Veggie Tales DVD arrives in the mail!

This brand new DVD, available this week, has me extra excited for two reasons:

  1. Scottish accents
  2. A lesson from my favorite chapter of the Bible!

The release of MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle was cause for celebration, so we invited a few friends over and had a Veggie Tales Movie Night…at 10:00 in the morning!

Veggie Tales Movie Night Supplies

Anybody knows that a good movie party has to have popcorn! We put them in some fun Veggie Tales Movie Night popcorn cones and settled in for the show!

Veggie Tales Party Popcorn

Veggie Tales Party Cheese

MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle is a lesson in getting along with others and appreciating our God-given differences. MacLarry lives in a world where his Scottish people, led by his father Chog Norrious {Veggie Tales always cracks me up with their names} are in a prank war with Pompus Maximus and the Romans! But MacLarry isn’t skilled in the same ways as his father and the other Barber-barians. His talents as an inventor aren’t appreciated until the Barber-barians realize that we all have different gifts and they are all useful, even in winning a prank war!

For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. ~Romans 12:4-6

This lesson from Romans 12 is one of my favorites and I was thrilled that Veggie Tales took it on in such a fun way! The kids all gave it two thumbs up as well!

Veggie Tales Party Thumbs Up

We followed up the movie with some cheesy snacks – nothing fancy, but right on for these kiddos’ appetites!

Veggie Tales Party Snacks

The fabulous Veggie Tales people have put together a super fun activity pack to go with MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle! We had coloring pages, word searches, mazes, and more to do after we watched the movie! The activity pack also includes singalong pages for each song in MacLarry, cheesy recipes to snack on, and other activities to do at your party! Little J had a blast telling the “Cheesy Jokes” to his friends after the movie!

MacLarry and the Stinky Cheese Battle was a hit with everyone and I know your family will love it and its lesson as well! You can get yours right now and celebrate the unique gifts God has given each of us as part of the body of Christ! And watch it with some friends, because that was some of the most veggie-rific fun we’ve had with a Veggie Tales movie!

I loved Romans 12 being a part of this movie. What is your favorite Bible verse featured in a Veggie Tales movie?

Deny Yourself: A New True Beauty Film from Lisa Chan

The True Beauty Films from Lisa Chan have truly been a breath of fresh air for me.

Lisa speaks with such calm and confidence. And her love for the Lord comes through in every word.

Deny Yourself 300x250Deny Yourself is the latest installment and I hate to admit just how much I need this message right now. Like, even as I write this right now.

God has been speaking to me all over the place about less of me and more of Him. In order to move towards that space, I need to start saying a lot more hard “no’s” to myself.

I needed Lisa’s voice to remind me of this once again. And the story Irene tells of her life throughout the DVD pulled me along as well and reminded me that HIS plan is always so much greater then MY plan. The lives impacted by Irene’s decision to follow Him just floored me. {You might need a few Kleenex}

“Love God, love others” has been resonating in my head big time this past week. Doing both requires a lot of denying of oneself. And I want to do both well.

Take a look at this beautiful trailer for Deny Yourself

True Beauty Deny Yourself TRAILER from Flannel Staff on Vimeo.

The True Beauty films come with discussion materials that would make them perfect for a women’s event or Bible study, but just watching them at home on my own as I fold laundry or cook dinner has been a blessing to me.

I would love to bless one of you with this newest True Beauty DVD, Deny Yourself! Just leave a comment below to be entered! The giveaway will close tomorrow {Thursday} at midnight!

Talking Truth With Our Kids + DVD Giveaway!

April is National Honesty Month. Honesty is such an important virtue to teach our children, but it is also important for us to be honest with them. And our honesty about our own struggles can be life-giving to them. You can read more about how I chose to be honest with my children about my battle with lying over at the Tommy Nelson blog today.

And as we try to establish these important character traits early on, I am so thankful for the resources being provided by companies like Tommy Nelson to help us get these messages through in fun and engaging ways!

This month, we had the privilege of viewing two fun DVDs from Tommy Nelson that the boys and I just loved!

Hermie Truth

I Will Tell the Truth is a collection of two classic Hermie episodes emphasizing the importance of honesty and the words we say. We love the Hermie books and movies here! The episode, “Flo the Lyin’ Fly,” was especially impacting to the kids and I. The story is similar to the Boy Who Cried Wolf, and we had a great discussion about how we build a reputation through our words, whether they are true or lies. Flo had gained a reputation as a liar so no one would believe her when she DID finally tell the truth. What a hard lesson to learn and the boys were really upset that no one would believe Flo – so many great conversations can come out of this DVD!

Cocka Doodle Doo

We also greatly enjoyed Cocka Doodle Doo the Right Thinga fabulous story about the Golden Rule set on a farm! This DVD features the voice talents of two singers I adore, Amy Grant and Vince Gill, and the cast of characters is such fun! Hercules the Rooster is at the center of the story as a full-of-himself rooster who thinks he is too important to help clean up around the farm. Hercules treats those around him quite rudely as the day goes on, but Hercules is the one who gets an unpleasant surprise at the end of the day because of his bad attitude! In addition to a great lesson, there is also fun music and lots of laughs!

You can win a set of these two great Tommy Nelson DVDs right here, right now!

What’s in the Bible? Goes New Testament! {Giveaway}

The much anticipated TENTH volume of What’s in the Bible? has arrived and the timing is just perfect!

What’s in the Bible? Volume 10: Jesus is the Good News takes the series into the New Testament for the first time. The two 25-minute episodes cover time between the Old and New Testament, the four gospels and the life of Jesus here on earth.

This volume follows in the great tradition of What’s in the Bible?, providing lots of Bible information, heart application, music and laughter! The meaning of “New Testament,” the authors of the gospels,the life of Jesus, and much more are covered in the smart and witty Phil Vischer-style we’ve all come to love!

I mentioned the perfect timing because this DVD is a wonderful resource to share about Jesus’s death and resurrection during this Lent and Easter season! I was so moved by the way What’s in the Bible? handled this tough subject for kids – with music and sorrow and gratitude to Jesus for His sacrifice for our sins. I definitely teared up watching it. I also applaud What’s in the Bible? for including a call for salvation for kids AND adults in this volume, encouraging those who don’t know Jesus to talk to a friend or pastor. I pray this will reach and change many hearts for Him!

If your family hasn’t started your What’s in the Bible? collection yet, you can get a great deal on all TEN volumes that have been released through the rest of this month! Order volumes one through ten as a bundle and enter the code BUNDLE10 at checkout to get 20% off!

Veggie Tales + Mother Goose = The Little House That Stood!

Just when I think VeggieTales can’t come up with any more ideas because they’ve already had a zillion, they prove me wrong!

This time they’re tackling  a classic children’s story, a parable, Mother Goose, and the theme of making good choices in The Little House That Stood!

When the Three Little Pigs roll into town looking to build some new houses, they meet one builder with a plan and two without a clue!  Larry builds with hay, Mr. Lunt builds with bricks, but only Bob builds his houses on a firm foundation – following the wise plans from the “Master Builder’s Handbook!”   Will they choose the right builder that will keep their houses – and their lives – on solid ground?  Find out in this pig’s tale that shows kids that when we follow God’s blueprints, we can make the right choices!

And the DVD goes on to include a Veggie-tastic retelling of Humpty Dumpty in the “The Good Egg of Gooseville!”
