It’s a Sister Thing

This post contains affiliate links.

My sister and I have not lived in the same place during our adult years. Despite the miles between us, we are closer than ever. Marriage and motherhood have given my sister and I so much to bond over. She is a wonderful aunt to our boys, and her two daughters and my three boys just adore each other! We only live less than three hours apart, so I’m thankful we get to see each other in person several times a year. And phone calls are a must, when we can find a few minutes of quiet!

13582173_10157139625880626_3799308655495628003_o

Now we’re adding another bonding experience. This fall, my sister and I will do something we’ve never done before: take a sisters-only trip! The trip is about sister time and being able to chat for hours without kids interrupting us (YAY!), but it’s also about another shared interest: running!

Sisters First Half

My sister ran my first 5K with me and I had the fun privilege of running with her for her first half marathon last fall. Next up is our sisters trip to run another half marathon together! We’ll also get some fun shopping and relaxing time before and after the race and I CANNOT WAIT!

Sis, if you’re reading this, I am super thankful for you and for the way our relationship has grown better and better over the years. I have a little present for you to celebrate our trip and our friendship. (I just borrowed it for a few minutes for this photo shoot, but it’s all yours!)

That Special Thing About My Mom {One of Many}

This post is part of a Mother’s Day partnership with Shari’s Berries. I received free product, but was not compensated in any other way for this post. All opinions are 100% my own.

This past Mother’s Day weekend, my parents agreed to have the boys at their house while The Hubby and I went to run a race. If you know my mom, this wouldn’t surprise you in the least.

IMG_6481

My mom has always been the woman who welcomes people in, and of course, she gladly welcomes her grandchildren any time. We are so blessed by their willingness to watch the boys and the ways they make the weekend fun for them.

It was in the original Mother’s Day plans for us to come back from our race and to indulge in some beautiful, yummy treats from Shari’s Berries with Mom. They asked me to pick out some wonderful gifts for my mom that we could all share. But on Saturday, Mom came down with a stomach bug and ended up being quarantined in the basement while Dad tried to corral the crazy that is our boys.

By the time, we arrived on Mother’s Day, Mom was feeling a little better and the Shari’s Berries treats had arrived, but you know how it is with the stomach bug – decadent treats (and taking pictures with them) were not a good fit for the day. I don’t know about you, but when I’ve been sick like that, the last thing I want is for people to be around. But Mom always makes the best of every situation and we were welcomed in as if she had been healthy all weekend. This is what makes her my wonderful mom. She’s not just a good hostess, but also never makes anyone feel like an inconvenience, even in the most inconvenient circumstances.

Shari's Berries Treat Box

Later in the day on Sunday, we opened up the Shari’s Berries treats – because Mom insisted – and enjoyed the scrumptious gourmet chocolate covered strawberries. Fruit and chocolate are always a good combination, but Shari’s Berries takes it up a notch with delicious toppings and lovely presentation!

Shari's Berries

Mom was able to enjoy a treat from the Mrs. Fields box that was a little less rich – the cinnamon sugar cookies were soft and perfect for a stomach not quite ready for chocolate decadence! There was also toffee fudge in that box that I hope she’s been able to enjoy by now because YUM!

Shari's Berries Both Boxes

I wanted to share pictures with you today that captured the welcoming, loving spirit of my mom on that Mother’s Day, but instead my words will have to do. I’m not sure any words or pictures could accurately capture what makes her the mom I love so much. Just know that there has never been a person who was not welcomed with open arms in her presence and her home, even at the most inopportune times. Like when you’ve had the stomach bug and three crazy boys in your house on Mother’s Day weekend.

I love you, Mom. Thanks for being who you are – an amazing example of unconditional love, making the best of every situation.

What makes your mom so special? How did you celebrate her this weekend?

Homemade Lemongrass Bath Salts

I’m all about easy these days and these homemade lemongrass bath salts are just about the easiest thing you could make!

These bath salts have become a favorite in our house. The Hubby + I often have sore muscles from running. The combination of lemongrass essential oil + Epsom salt provides relief for our aching muscles and joints. Lemongrass also heightens awareness and promotes a positive outlook, so a good mood is an extra bonus!

Homemade lemongrass bath salts would be a great gift for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day, especially for the active mom or dad in your life! Just make up the mixture and put it in a mason jar with a cute label!

How about that EASY recipe now?

Lemongrass Bath Salts (1)

Homemade Lemongrass Bath Salts

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup sea salt
  • 10-15 drops Lemongrass bath salts

Directions

Combine salts in a small glass or metal bowl. Add desired number of drops of essential oil to the salt mixture and mix well. Transfer mixture to an airtight container such as a mason jar for storage. To use in a bath, pour a few teaspoons of the bath salts into the water while filling the tub.

Great Gift Books for Your Guys!

I received some of these books to review. I was not compensated in any way for writing about them, and all opinions are 100% my own. I have also included affiliate links below. When you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this site and our sponsorship of our Compassion child, Samson!

As you know, I’m surrounded by guys. Add in grandpas and uncles and nephews…the number just keeps growing! I’m always looking for unique gifts to fit the interests and personalities of these guys and every year, books are a great option that don’t disappoint!

Gift Books

There are plenty of new great gift books for your guys this year and I wanted to share a few of my favorite with you! If you have Amazon Prime, you can order them today and still get them in time for Christmas with free two-day shipping! If you don’t have Amazon Prime, grab the free 30-day trial now and use it for your last-minute holiday shopping!  {Have I mentioned how much I adore Amazon Prime? So many reasons…}

And now for the books…

For the little guys

Diggit

Diggit Saves the Day and Tipper Tells a Lie are part of the brand new Building God’s Kingdom board book series by Andy Holmes. The stories center around a crew of construction vehicles who learn lessons about character and godliness. My little guy loves the trucks and I love what he is learning! I can’t wait for more book sin this series to share with him.

For the school-age boys

Action Bible

The Action Bible is a favorite in our home because it tells the stories of the Bible in comic-book style and my boys are totally enthralled by it. I’ve seen it capture their attention and, after reading it, they want to look up more about each story in their own Bibles. This is a definite winner with visual learners and comic book lovers alike!

Star Wars Rebels

Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide is a brand new book about this new series on Disney XD. Our boys love the show, but they love reading about the characters and settings just as much as they do watching the show! They checked this book out at the library and were so sad when they had to return it, so I think they’ll be thrilled to find it under the tree this year!

Star Wars 100 Scenes

Star Wars in 100 Scenes is one of my favorite finds because it covers the whole Star Wars saga in one book. I’m a big fan of the original three movies and my guys like the new ones, so this is a book we can all enjoy!

For the comic book fan

Marvel

Marvel Comics: 75 Years of Cover Art could be enjoyed by Marvel fans of any age thanks to the movies introducing a new generation to characters such as Captain America and Thor. I love that my guys can see the characters as they were originally imagined in this fabulous collection of cover art!

DC Comics

DC Comics: A Visual History is another great find along the same lines as the Marvel Comics book. Whether it’s a dad or uncle who has always loved Superman or your kids who are currently obsessed, this visual history is fascinating and a great gift!

For the athlete

Running & Being

Running & Being is known as the book that really got people running again. George Sheehan’s thoughts on running are applicable to newbies and veterans alike. The Hubby was so excited to receive this from his parents this year for Christmas!

For the traveler

Great Maps

Great Maps will captivate those who love to travel and those who have always dreamed of it. This book from the Smithsonian is not along informative, but also a fine work of art and a great conversation piece. The well-traveled man in your life would appreciate this handsome book.

What books do the guys in your life love? Are you gifting any books to the guys in your life this Christmas?

Pro Compression socks

Don’t laugh. Compression socks are just for older people and pregnant women. As The Hubby once said to me, “They’re like a hug for my legs.” I wasn’t convinced until I was given my own pair of Pro Compression socks to review and pulled them on after my Thanksgiving morning trail half marathon. These things are magic. I had very little soreness in my legs the next day like I normally would after a race and I know the compression socks were a major reason.

Compression socks deliver maximum comfort and speedy recovery times. The science is complex, but benefits such as improved blood flow, stability and comfort are universally understood. Compression socks are also great for wearing during long runs! With all the fun colors and patterns, you can get compression socks for any personality! Use the code PINK2 to get 40% off on your order from Pro Compression through December 15th!

Why did I not learn of FUNKtional Wearables a year ago when I got my Fitbit?! FUNKtional Wearables makes fashionable jewelry to hide your Fitbit tracker! That’s right – your favorite active woman doesn’t have to wear the black Fitbit band all the time in order to keep track of her steps! I have a fabulous silver cuff and a gorgeous gold bracelet both from FUNKtional that I just adore. And the prices are the best, with most items for less than $40!

Running & Being

So many wonderful choices in this area! Here are a few suggestions:

If the runner you love likes to do races, a medal display is the perfect way to celebrate their accomplishments! There a MANY choices for medal displays, including this great one on Amazon! There are also displays for race bibs or a combination of medals and bibs!

Runner's World Cookbook

The Runner’s World Cookbook

Being a runner doesn’t mean you have to eat healthy food that tastes like cardboard and The Runner’s World Cookbook is proof. It might be one of my favorite cookbooks ever. The food is delicious, the recipes aren’t too complicated, and each recipe is labeled with categories such as pre-run, recovery, vegan, and so on. Even if you’re not a runner, I still think you’d love this cookbook!

My holiday run list could go on and on, but hopefully this short list will give you quick ideas to please the runner in your life this Christmas!

A Mary & Martha Home

I saw this beautiful print on Instagram one day, framed in someone else’s dining or living room area, and I fell in love. I had to have it, not just for its beauty, but also for its message.

They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. Acts 2:46

Hospitality has been stirring in my heart for months now. Before we moved, I used to love have people in our home, no matter how small it was or how crowded we were. Then a third baby, a move to another city, and residency happened and well, opening my home didn’t happen as much.

My heart is yearning for a new season of opening my heart and home to friends and family. I don’t know what that physically looks like because I’m focusing on the heart right now. God is using the current She Reads Truth study to do a WORK in me regarding the heart of hospitality before I take the steps to act on it. I’m so thankful.

Mary & Martha Tea Towel

And it turns out that beautiful print was not a print at all. It was a tea towel that had been framed and that tea towel was from Mary & Martha, a part of the DaySpring family focused on beautiful items that promote the true heart of hospitality in our homes!

Mary & Martha Home

I pretty much love everything on their site, but this tea towel is the one item that won my heart. Instead of framing mine, I stretched it over a 20×24 canvas and put it up above the cabinets in my kitchen, the place where we all spend most of our time! I wanted Acts 2:46 in that space not only as a reminder of the hospitality God invites us to extend, but also as a call to myself to serve my own family and enjoy fellowship as much with them as I would with any guests in our home. Did I mention the Acts 2:46 tea towel is only $22?!

Many more Mary & Martha items are on my wishlist, including the Giant Ampersand {for my mantel} the sweet Honey Jar, and the gorgeous Praise Tray! Mary & Martha invites us to live in the “and” – a life that is part Mary and part Martha, as our lives can never be just one or the other. I love this heart so much and the products all reflect this lifestyle!

Giant Ampersand Honey Jar Praise Tray

I’m hosting an online Mary & Martha party this week with my local friend + Mary & Martha representative, Alice. You don’t have to RSVP. You don’t have to go anywhere. You don’t even have to change out of your pajamas. You can shop for your home or for gifts just by following this link!

Mary & Marth Special

During this party, when you spend $100, you can get ANY item in the fall or seasonal guide for 50% off! So you could spend $100 on gifts for Christmas and then get the Giant Ampersand for 50% off! It does not have to be an item of lesser value! What a GREAT special!

This party will close Monday, November 17th, so orders will process in time for you to give these beautiful gifts for Christmas! Please feel free to email me at homewiththeboys at gmail dot com if you have any questions at all!

Which Mary & Martha items are you loving for home or for gifts?
