Freeset + Micah 6:8

Ten years ago, I couldn’t even tell you where the book of Micah was in the Bible. Today, a verse from that Old Testament book is one of the most important in my life and it is being plastered around my home and in my heart.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. ~Micah 6:8

Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly with your God. Yes, this is what I want for myself and my family. It’s not a hard verse to remember, but visual reminders are always good to spur us on to action. That’s why I love my newest bag from Freeset, the amazing organization rescuing women from slavery in India and giving them jobs with which they can love and support their families!

Freeset Bag Only

This is the Territory bag from Freeset with the words, “Act Love Walk” in the print. It has become my laptop + travel bag because it holds everything so well!

Freeset Bag Open

My laptop fits in its sleeve in the back section, while I can put a steno notepad and my favorite magazines, plus a few other odds + ends, in the front section! The front flap closes with large velcro strips.

Freest Bag Back
And on the back side is a zippered pocket for anything you might want to keep separate and secure!

Freeset bag Full

We use Freeset bags for EVERYTHING, so I’m glad to have this Territory bag for my own personal use now! It fits all my needs for a computer bag with room to spare, it shares a message close to my heart, AND it supports the beautiful women rescued in India, now working jobs they love!

Freeset has TONS of bags of all shapes, sizes, and uses. Check out their whole line, especially leading up to Mother’s Day! The jute gift bags are so cute!

Do you own a Freeset bag yet? Which style is your favorite?

I received this bag to review from Freeset. I was not compensated in any way for this post, and all opinions are 100% my own.

Be Generous With Your Words

I have to pinch myself sometimes when I think about how incredibly blessed I am by the amazing women God has put in my life. It really is like a dream. Women far and near who love and encourage and pray for me, each put there for a reason.

Being a “gifts” love language person, I want to buy them all beautiful, thoughtful gifts in appreciation for the ways they’ve spoke life and love into my world. Well, really, I’d like to fly us all to a private island for a week where we could laugh and cry and be refreshed. And eat anything we want. And not change any diapers. And get a tan. But those things kind of cost money…a lot of it…and that’s just not possible.

What I do have is words. Words are free, but they carry so much value. When we want to bless others in big ways on a small budget, words are the way to go.

God laid it on my heart as I approached my 33rd birthday to be generous with my words. I started a list of the women who have blessed my life over the years and pretty soon I was at 33. Family, friends, mentors, colleagues. The list kept growing. And I started writing.

A few cards a day, with carefully chosen words, filling ME up with joy and gratitude and being sent on their way. Friends, I thought I was doing this because God wanted me to bless the women in my life, and I’m sure that was part of it, but He just heaped more blessings on me in the process. And I’m still going. This cheering on of others is addictive.

The value of a cute notecard and stamp, when paired with a little time and an open, encouraging heart, multiplies infinitely in the hands of God. And when we are generous with our words and obedient to His calling to share, His timing is always perfect. I can’t even tell you the number of times a handwritten card has shown up in my mailbox with just the words I needed to hear on that very day. He is so good like that.

When you feel like you have much to be thankful for, but don’t have much to give, can I encourage you to be generous in the giving of encouraging words to those you love? Don’t hold back in speaking words of life to others. Tell them they matter to you and to God and you are giving them something worth more than anything money could buy.

Be Generous With Your Words

How do you give your words generously? Are an email or snail mail encourager? Which do you prefer to receive?

I love to use little blank notecards like the ones above, but my favorite cards in the WORLD to send are always from DaySpring. They are unique and sweet and faith-filled and I can always find one with just the right words. Now through June 30, 2014, all DaySpring boxed card sets {affiliate link} are buy two get one free with the code B2G1Cards at checkout! I especially love the Holley Gerth Heart to Heart boxed set!

A Gift from the One Who Sees Me

In elementary school, the teacher would sit us all in a circle, criss-cross applesauce, for an ice-breaker activity.

“Think of a word to describe yourself that begins with the first letter of your first name.”

Ooh, how I loved these circle times. Exciting, excellent, enthusiastic! I even liked when the challenge varied a little bit. Favorite animal? Elephant! Place you want to visit? Europe!

“E” words were special to me from a young age. They felt like mine.

I spoke at my first conference this weekend – two sessions on finding freedom in healthy living at the Refresh My Heart conference – and loved every single minute. Lelia, the founder of the conference, put together an amazing weekend of Jesus and brave, inspiring women. I was so honored to be a part of it and found myself renewed as I left.

Over and over again, my fellow speakers shared stories of our God who sees and knows us better than anyone else has or ever will. Stories of God showing up and showing off His great love for us in ways only He can. The way He uses clouds and running and notebooks to say, “I see you. I love you.”

And then He showed up and showed off for me, right there in the middle of a general session.

A Gift from the One Who Sees Me

Michelle, Lelia’s sister, had been praying about a way to bless each of the ladies attending Refresh My Heart and this is what happened next… {in Lelia’s words}

She ordered wooden hearts and bought a wood burning kit. Michelle and our mom burned the edges of each heart. Then my sister found 60 words and was going to use each word twice, but my daughter Alyssa insisted that they find a word for each woman.

They found the words and Michelle began to engrave a word on each heart. Then she turned the hearts over and prayed about them for weeks about what name to put on what heart. She never flipped the hearts over to see what word was going with what name, not even on her own heart. She engraved a name on each heart then she placed it in a little box and they tied a ribbon around it.

She had no idea what I would be talking about and how well this went with my message, about how God sees us and how we need to believe what He thinks of us.

After my message, I told everyone to open their boxes and see what God thinks about them…

One woman shouted, “No way!” Some smiled. Some laughed. Some cried. It was absolutely beautiful. Only God could do something like that. Something to let us know, “I see you.”

What a God!

What a gift of time and love from Michelle and Alyssa to each of us women. I was moved even before I opened my box.  And then I did…

Gift From God

…and flipped over my heart…

Exquisite. An “e” word. Just for me. Because only He could know. My breath was taken away for a moment. And I was that little girl in elementary school again, treasuring a word that seemed to be just for me.

The Hubby would later tell me “exquisite” has always been one of his favorite words.

A sweet friend I met at the conference learned of my word and texted me the definition:

exquisite: of special beauty or charm, or rare and appealing excellence

He sees me. He thinks I’m exquisite. He knows just what I need right when I need it.

I may be turning 33 today, but inside, I am His little girl treasuring the “e” word He picked just for me.

What a God. What a gift.

When My StrengthsFinder Results Made Me Cry

I have included affiliate links below. When you purchase through these links, I may receive a small commission. Thank you for supporting this site and our sponsorship of our Compassion child, Samson!

I’ve been on a journey these last few months to really embrace and step out into the life of adventure God has for me. I’ve become more of a goal-setter, but always seeking His will when making these goals. His glory and a life of vitality are my constant pursuits.

Some fabulous resources have come my way in this journey, many of which I will be sharing with you soon because they are too good to keep to myself. One such resource was mentioned by person after person, in several books and blog posts I read, and I finally had to break down and get it for myself.

That book was StrengthsFinder 2.0.

I like to take free personality tests and such online, so I balked a little at paying for a book and test that would probably tell me more of what I already knew about myself, but I finally caved. You have to buy the book to get your special code to take the test – I have to admit that is kind of top-secret and fun.

I read the intro of the book and was quickly inspired by the words I was reading. Tom Rath points out that so many of the learning and development programs we encounter are based on pinpointing our weaknesses and trying to improve in those areas. When you think about this, there is SO much truth there. And I’ve generally seen that as a good thing – trying to get better at the things I’m not so good at – but not after reading this book.

When we’re able to put most of our energy into developing our natural talents, extraordinary room for growth exists.

Putting most of our energy into what we’re already good at? I’ve had a basic understanding of what I’m “good at” for a while, but this understanding was just surface level. In this culture, we want to fix our weaknesses more than we want to make our strengths stronger. And those strengths end up being under-utilized.

Our natural talents and passions – the things we truly love to do – last for a lifetime. But all too often, our talents go untapped.

After reading quotes like this…

Across the board, having the opportunity to develop our strengths is more important to our success than our role, our title, or even our pay.

…my desire to know more about my strengths, or natural talents, grew quickly, so I tucked myself away at a coffee shop on my “writing night” and took the test. And as I read the results thirty minutes later, I cried.

No, I wasn’t disappointed with what I was reading. I was overwhelmed. These test results – extremely accurate results – felt in that moment like a little note from God saying, “I created you exactly as I wanted, with these beautiful gifts with which to love me and love others. Stop focusing on what you lack and use these talents to change the world around you.”

Yep, I was welling up, dabbing tears at the little coffee shop table, realizing how little we love the good things about ourselves. I’m not talking about anything we can see, but about who we are. I think so much about how I wish I wasn’t so absent-minded or selfish or messy. I don’t like it when I’m reminded of my tendency toward laziness or my inability to finish projects on time. Our culture of “self-improvement” has probably made us dislike ourselves more than anything else.

I had a similar emotional reaction last week when, as part of an “assignment” from one of the great resources I mentioned before, I had to ask several people close to me what I do well. As they texted me back, I almost wanted to stop reading because I found myself not believing what they had to say. “They have to say nice things because they are my friends and family,” I told myself. But when two or more people start pointing out the same things they see as strengths in you, it’s hard to push that away. And I cried on my bed in that moment as well…lots of good tears.

Romans 12:3-8 lays out so well what God intends for the gifts He places inside of us:

Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us. Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

This whole process of discovering of my strengths is not about puffing up my ego, but an honest evaluation must include good with the bad. If I were to continue to only focus on my deficits, I would never get to what He lays out next – using my gifts, natural talents, strengths for the body of Christ.

And as Rath points out in StrengthsFinder 2.0

We’ve discovered that the most successful people start with dominant talent – and then add skills, knowledge, and practice to the mix.

Success looks different for everyone, but for me it is a life that points to Christ and exudes love. And I’m going to start focusing on and using my dominant talents with that success in mind.

I’m not going to go into detail with my StrengthsFinder 2.0 results because I just got them and I’m a newbie to all of this, but I will tell you what my Top 5 strengths were:

  1. Woo
  2. Positivity
  3. Learner
  4. Communication
  5. Input

I’m sure this is not the last you’ll hear from me on this topic! And if you’ve taken it, I would love to hear what your Top 5 are as well!

So let’s talk about this… when was the last time you really thought about or focused on your strengths? Is it easier for you to focus on your talents or your weaknesses? If you can’t think of any natural talents, ask some friends and/or family to help you get started!

Giftly: A New Way to Do Gift Cards!

I have a lot of long distance friends. I am so thankful for phones and texting and social media to stay connected, but it’s hard when you want to celebrate or grieve or just be there with them through the ups and downs of life and it’s just too far.

Bringing over a freezer meal or watching a friend’s kids while she has a few hours to herself just aren’t always possible. That’s where I’ve found gift cards to be a great opportunity to bless a friend. The only problem is I usually don’t know much about the town they live in, so picking out a restaurant or nail salon they will like can be difficult.

I just discovered a great solution to this dilemma with gift cards and it’s called Giftly!

Ok, so here’s how Giftly works…

  • Give a Giftly via email, text, print out, or a high-quality greeting card in the mail.
  • The recipient chooses the most convenient way to receive the funds: as a credit to their own debit or credit card or as a payment to their PayPal account.
  • You suggested something you think they’d like, they share with you how they spent the money.
  • They always get what they want!

You can choose to gift someone dinner, a massage, a night at the movies, coffee, and so much more! And because you don’t specify WHERE they have to use their Giftly, they get to choose their favorite place to eat or go out or relax!

Screen Shot 2014-01-22 at 10.27.21 PM

My favorite idea for using Giftly? Gifting dinner at any restaurant to friends for a date night! I think a lot of parents need a little kick in the pants to get out the door for some couple time, and not having to pay for dinner is a definite boost!

There is a $4 processing fee on the purchaser’s end, but when you can’t be there to help or bless a friend in a person, the extra $4 is worth it!

What kind of Giftly gift cards would you see yourself giving the most?

What I Wore: Lavished Grace

Just because the days are cold and gray doesn’t mean I have to be, right?!

These beautiful recycled beads, shown above in three stacking bracelets, were handmade by women in Uganda. The sale of these beads helps feed and house their families, send their children to school. receive medical care, and find hope for the future.

This necklace is so fun because it is SUPER long, so you can wear it many ways! I have it doubled here, but I also love it tripled up!
