We Built a House: The Basement

This post is sponsored by Nebraska Furniture Mart. We received products and a gift card as compensation.

We’re continuing home tour week today with a look at our basement! I did a Facebook Live video tour of the basement yesterday, but here’s a recap for you!

A finished basement was on our list of musts in the new house because we wanted a dedicated space for two things:

  1. Having guests stay with us
  2. Letting the kids play and be loud

It has been SUCH a blessing to have a space where the boys can wrestle, play games, and be loud and crazy without driving us all crazy! When we’ve had friends over, the kids and parents are all having fun in their own spaces and I LOVE IT.

The high ceilings in the basement are just perfect because it doesn’t feel closed in and dark. We have games, puzzles, Legos, and more for the kid to use and so far they’re keeping it pretty organized!

The furniture from our living room in the old house was just right for this basement family room space. Even with the coach, loveseat, chair, and ottoman, the space still feels wide open!

One new piece we needed in this family room was an entertainment center. The TV needed a higher spot than the low shelves we had previously and we needed storage for movies and game systems. My husband spotted this entertainment credenza and it was exactly what we wanted and needed at a very affordable price. He and my dad put it together that afternoon and I just love the look of it! There were SO many choices at Nebraska Furniture Mart, so whatever your style, you’ll find an entertainment center you love!

This kitchenette in the main basement area feels like a bonus to me – something I never thought of having, but it was in our builder’s plans, so we went with it. I’ve started to find great uses for it, such as a popcorn bar for the kids during our Super Bowl party! Of course, having this space required another refrigerator, so we picked out another LG fridge – much more basic than the one on the main level, but just right for the kitchenette. I love that it has an ice maker in the freezer, mainly for entertaining. We’ve also stocked it with water bottles and some healthy snacks for guests or for the kids if they get hungry or thirsty while playing.

It’s really hard to get a good picture of these smaller rooms, like the bathrooms, pantry, etc., but I wanted to give you a little peek at our guest bathroom. The Hubby had the grand idea of making the guest bathroom a nicer space for our guests with a nice glass shower door and tiled walls. The bathroom is a lot more open than many basement bathrooms and I LOVE how it turned out!

Last, but not least, is the guest bedroom. Yes, it is super basic right now, but it has a bed and space for guests to stay, so I’m rejoicing in that right now! The furniture in the guest room is part of our bedroom set from when we got married. I believe this was our first Nebraska Furniture Mart purchase and it has held up so well over the past 14 years! I’m glad it still has a place in our home even though we’ve moved up to a king-size bed – watch for that in our next home tour post on the bedrooms!

I did leave one room out in the basement – the exercise room. As runners, this was an important room for us to add into the floor plan to house our treadmill, weights, yoga mats, and more. We’ve already made good use of the space, but I want to get it all finished up before I share it here with you. It might be a while since we’re waiting on getting a new treadmill, but you can get a sneak peek at what it looks like now in my Facebook Live video from yesterday!

We still two posts to go in our home tour – the bedrooms (upstairs) and my office! Tomorrow (Thursday, February 23), I will do a Facebook Live about the upstairs, so join me over on my Facebook page for that fun! See you there!

We Built a House: The Main Floor

This post is sponsored by Nebraska Furniture Mart. We received products and a gift card as compensation.

It’s about time I shared a house tour, right?! Before I dive in, here’s a little background on this “we built a house” story:

When The Hubby took a job here after residency, we knew we wanted to move into something with a little more room as our “forever” house. We wanted a large, open concept main floor and a guest bedroom, plus a basement for the kids to enjoy. We looked around at houses for sale here and there, but we didn’t find what we wanted, so we started to explore the option of building.

Last spring, we toured a few models and fell in love with a two-story home. It didn’t have a guest bedroom in the basement, but we were able to add it into the plans, and by April 2016, we were picking out lots. That process took FOREVER so I’ll spare you those details (mostly because I don’t want to relive it). Finally, in July 2016, we broke ground and the building began.

Someday I’ll go into a VERY LENGTHY post about building a house, but today is not that day. For now, I’ll just say that I felt like we were making decisions nonstop from July through December. ALL THE DECISIONS. But it was totally worth it, because when we moved in on December 30, 2016, we moved into our dream home.

Today, I’m sharing with you the main floor. Two disclaimers:

  1. I am NOT a designer or master decorator in any way. You will never see me featured on a home decor blog and I am JUST FINE with that. Our home fits us and that’s exactly how I want it. There are still some blank walls that need art or photos – I’ll get there eventually!
  2. I’m not showing you the office…yet. I’m finishing up a few last details and hope to have it ready by later this week. It was the last room to get any attention!

Welcome to our home!

This is what you first walk into when you enter our home. Everything is open on the main level (except for the bathroom and office) and it has been absolute heaven for this girl who loves to entertain and have everyone in the space without feeling cramped.

We had this table as our main dining table in our previous home and it fits this space right by the entry perfectly. I can’t really call this a “formal dining” room because we use it for so much more than that – space for coloring and puzzles and games and yes, sometimes eating! We chose to switch out the carpet for more hardwood in this area and I’m super glad we did. Also, I’m in love with that light fixture.

With two living rooms in this house, we needed another set of furniture, so we went to our second home, Nebraska Furniture Mart. We ended up with this fabulous couch (similar) and a matching loveseat (similar), which both recline. We basically all want to be in this living room all the time. It just feels so warm and cozy.

While at Nebraska Furniture Mart, we were also searching for a table for the breakfast nook and a little extra storage for the main level. We found a table we loved and this matching sideboard called our name. It has been the perfect room divider and storage place for cookbooks, vases, and even some decks of cards.

How beautiful is the matching table?! It is a counter height table with six chairs, so the five of us eat dinner here nightly and love it. I often sit here for bible study or planning in the morning while eating breakfast because I love all the natural light!

And that brings me to the room that has my heart and soul…

The kitchen. Excuse me while I happy sigh as I have a million times since we moved in.

The gorgeous quartz countertops. The huge island where I can prepare food while the kids eat or do homework on the other side. The beautiful vent hood. The slow-close drawers, including a drawer for the trash cans. THE POT FILLER. I could go on and on because I adore this space.

The double wall ovens. The walk-in pantry. That fabulous fridge. I’m telling you – picking a fridge is not easy, but Nebraska Furniture Mart employees were so very helpful in narrowing down our choices and getting us the best deal. Hint: buying appliances in November is a VERY good idea. Thank you, Black Friday deals. There’s a sneak peek at my office through that pocket door. I can’t wait to have it all done to share with you!

Did you see these bar stools peeking out, too? We tried to keep our old bar stools, but they were just a little too high (and pretty beat up), so we found these beauties at Nebraska Furniture Mart – where else? Since the kids will be sitting on these the most, we had them try sitting on several options, including some fabric, some with backs, and some that spin (NO, THANK YOU). In the end, these wide saddle-like wooden stools were a favorite for all of us. Sturdy, comfortable, and good-looking is a win in my book!

Around that corner is our mudroom/drop zone and a powder room. It is a life-saver to have that space for backpacks, shoes, coats, and more, as well as a bathroom on the main level.

I love every part of this home we built, but this main floor is a dream. I have loved being here with our family and welcoming people in. Baking, watching football, playing games, pizza + movie nights, fellowship with friends – everything we love fits perfectly in this space.

Throughout this week, I’ll be sharing more house tours here on the blog, but also on Facebook Live! Join me today at 11:30 AM CST for the first live tour over on my Home with the Boys Facebook page and stay tuned for the times for the rest of the week!

My Son’s Favorite Hand Soap (And How to Get It Free!)

This post contains affiliate links.

Weird title, I know, but that’s what I’m hear to tell you about today.

Last month, as we were settling into our new house (tour coming very soon), I received my latest Grove Collaborative order. In this order was a new Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap we hadn’t tried before – Lavender. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the smell, but I ordered it because the packaging would look good in our house full of grays.

When it arrived (along with some other household favorites), I knew the color would be perfect and was ready to put it next to my kitchen sink, but then our oldest son let me know he didn’t have any hand soap in his bathroom. I gave it up to him and left it at that since I still had the Apple Cider Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap at my kitchen sink from the fall (I miss fall).

Just a couple weeks later, I was getting ready to place my next Grove Collaborative order and thought to ask him how the soap was working. His response totally surprised me:

“Oh Mom, I LOVE that soap. It smells SO good!”

Not at all what I expected from my ten-year-old son as he has never commented on the smell of soap before, but what a happy surprise! His response was what convinced me to keep that Lavender Mrs. Meyer’s hand soap in my cart AND add the Lavender dish soap to my order, as well! Once I smelled it, I was convinced: everybody needs a little Lavender Mrs. Meyer’s in their home.

Why We’re Still Using Wipes In a Diaper-Less House

This post was sponsored by WaterWipes as part of an Ambassador Program for Influence Central. I received complimentary products to facilitate my review.

I really wish I would have know about WaterWipes when we had babies in diapers. With all three babies, we used wipes and detergent with no added fragrances because sensitive skin runs in our family. Our middle son still struggles with sensitive skin and eczema, so we’ve kept to fragrance-free as much as possible.

We’ve been done with diapers in our house for over a year now – HALLELUJAH! We had a bunch of wipes left over and, even without bottoms to wipe, I found myself still using those wipes for everything. Over the baby years, I didn’t even realize how handy and convenient they had become to me for all kinds of messes. Ice cream cones, sticky suckers, marker-covered hands, and more were no match for my stash of wipes!

WaterWipes Car

Fast forward to several months ago and my introduction to WaterWipes – the timing could not have been better as I was running out of my previous fragrance-free wipes and needed to restock. I’m so glad I didn’t buy more because WaterWipes were just the thing I had been hoping to find over all these years!

WaterWipes are a chemical free baby wipe with just two ingredients: 99.9% pure Irish water and 0.1% grapefruit seed extract. I feel great about using these for all sorts of messes with my family because there are no harmful chemicals! All of the usefulness of baby wipes with none of the extras – what’s not to love?!

Why we're still using wipes in aDiaper-less house

Why do I keep using wipes even though we are diaper-less? One word: convenience. My three boys are always getting dirty and I’ve been known to make a few messes, too. I keep a pack of WaterWipes in the minivan, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, and in my purse, so I am always ready when a mess pops up!

IMG_4907

I’m pretty sure our latest road trip to Colorado would have been a whole lot messier without WaterWipes! We used them on the car ride, for picnic lunches, and on our hikes. It was so handy to have them in my backpack to clean off hands before a mid-hike snack or clean up extra mud.

One more reason to love WaterWipesthis beautiful video on the importance of skin-to-skin contact between mom and baby!

My boys may be growing up fast, but this video has me fondly remembering those newborn skin-to-skin snuggles. Such a sweet time in motherhood! I love the emphasis on purity by WaterWipes, both in love and in the product!

How are you using wipes in your home?

At The Cross (and a $5 Flash Sale)

I received this cross to review from Dayspring. This post contains affiliate links.

I need you to know I am not a chalkboard artist. I love to write and I was a teacher, but writing on chalkboards was never my favorite. If someone wants to find a few extra hours a week for me and come over to give me chalkboard art lessons, I would be a willing student because I LOVE the look of chalkboards of all kinds.

You also need to know that I have a hard time letting things go. I’m not talking about forgiving people or holding grudges. I struggle with giving my worries and fears and disappointments to God and leaving them in His hands. I need to take this advice that I give to my kids about handling disappointment, but I’m still a work-in-progress myself.

When this chalkboard cross from Dayspring arrived at my doorstep, I thought about all the cute designs I could put on it if I was a better chalk artist, but God put just one simple reminder in my head:

“at the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life”

Cross Close

I knew right away what He was telling me. I need to surrender those hurt, negative feelings and LEAVE them there at the cross. My sin nature leads me to try to pick them up and carry them on my own, but He wants them LEFT AT THE CROSS.

Cross Tall

It’s just a chalkboard cross, but in the hands of God it became so much more. The art isn’t beautiful, but to me, it is a powerful visual reminder of His promise to carry my burdens.

Cross Wide

The cross means different things to different people and that is the beauty of this blank chalkboard cross – you can use it as you need and as God leads to speak life, freedom, hope into your home!

I would love for each of you to have one, so I partnered with Dayspring to give you an amazing discount! From now until Monday, August 8, use the code ERIN5 to get your own small chalkboard cross for only $5!

Want to get free shipping on your order? Grab several of these $5 small chalkboard crosses to use as gifts and add some faith-inspired school supplies to put your order over $50 and shipping will be free! There is also an awesome $5 flash sale featuring 28 more items going on right now, so stock up on these great deals while you’re getting your $5 cross!

Cleaning is Better with FREE Caldrea Products!

This post contains affiliate links.

TRUE OR FALSE: Cleaning is a necessary evil in my life.

Most of the time I would say TRUE. I’m not the best at keeping a clean home and I can’t really say I love it. However, since cleaning is a necessity (yes, with three boys, but also just cleaning up after my messy self), I have to decide whether it is going to be a burden or a blessing for my family home. Sometimes, you just need the right perspective to change chores into happy, productive work. Maybe a spoonful of sugar would help, too?

I also think having the right cleaning products – ones that work well and smell good – can make any chore better. And when those amazing products are FREE?! Well, you know it will be a good cleaning day!

At Home in the Good Life

I received this necklace for review from Cents of Style. This post contains affiliate links.

I grew up in South Dakota. The same city and state my whole childhood. I loved “my” state.

When it came time to choose a college, however, I needed to spread my wings a little. I didn’t fly too far, just to neighboring Nebraska, where I found my place as a Husker. Lincoln was just supposed to be my college home, but it became much more.

In Lincoln, I found a personal relationship with Jesus. My faith changed and grew and made me a new person in Christ starting my freshman year of college.

In Lincoln, I met my husband. We were both in the Cornhusker Marching Band. He proposed to me in the Sunken Gardens. We got married in Lincoln and made it through some major challenges together in those first few years.

In Lincoln, we bought our first home. Just two months before our first child was born, we found a cute little place to call our own. We moved in record time with the largest moving crew of friends ever just one month before Big J made his arrival.

In Lincoln, all three of our children were born. Three handsome boys joined our family in the span of six years. Each boy was dedicated to the Lord at our church in Lincoln.

We no longer live in Lincoln, but we have found our place here in Nebraska. It truly is the Good Life. While South Dakota will always be my birth state, Nebraska is home.

When I saw the new state necklace design from Cents of Style, featuring the state name and the coordinates of that state’s capitol, I knew immediately it would be a treasure for me.

State Necklace Alone Wood

Lincoln is the capitol of Nebraska and holds a very special place in my heart, for all the reasons listed above and more.

State Necklace Full OutfitState Necklace Looking

I was hesitant to leave Lincoln at first, but we love our new hometown and I can’t imagine living anywhere else but Nebraska. I still love Lincoln and I can hold it and all its wonderful memories close with this beautiful double-bar necklace.

My 2015 Verse of the Year (and the story behind it)

I received this canvas to review from Naptime Diaries. I was not compensated in any other way for this post and all opinions are 100% my own.

This summer, The Hubby and I were in the middle of a decision-making season. With the end of residency approaching, we were faced with two job offers and no clear answers. We had scheduled a second visit to one of the clinics, so I texted and emailed a few close friends to ask for prayer.

I was humbled and blessed by their responses and willingness to stand in the gap as we looked to God for the next step in our future. The morning of our trip, I opened up my inbox to find a message from one particular friend who shared the verse she was praying for us…

“They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.” -Isaiah 49:10

NTD Verse Featured
My mouth dropped open. And then I cried. What I hadn’t mentioned to my friend {or to you} is that the town we were visiting and considering for our future home was located on a river.

NTD Verse Water

We wouldn’t make our final decision for another two months after that visit, but I couldn’t get the verse and its connection with the water out of my head.

NTD Verse Lead

Guidance. Leadership. Compassion from the Lord. This is what we were looking for in our time of uncertainty. And this verse from a friend also provided much comfort.

NTD Verse Compassion

Two months later, The Hubby signed a contract in that wonderful small town on the river. Isaiah 49:10 – a word from God spoken through a friend – became a key verse in our life and it’s the guiding verse for us in 2015.

As we prepare for a move – selling a house, buying a house, ending residency and starting at a clinic, transitioning our whole family – it fills my heart with hope and peace to know He cares enough to compassionately guide and lead us.

When my friend Jessi of Naptime Diaries asked if she could design a 2015 verse of the year print for our family, it was obvious what our choice would be.

NTD Verse Mantel

I couldn’t be happier with her design! When I opened our canvas, I had tears in my eyes. Not only is the verse so meaningful to us, but the colors and texture match it so perfectly. It sits atop our mantel now as my constant reminder and inspiration. I am so incredibly grateful.

The whole Verse of the Year collection from Naptime Diaries is just gorgeous and each one has a wonderful story behind it. You really need to check them all out. We have Naptime Diaries pieces all over our home and they are such a blessing!

I’m so excited to say you can buy the Isaiah 49:10 print or anything you want from the whole Naptime Diaries shop – including the fabulous new Lent devotional – for 25% off with the code “homewiththeboys” through the end of February! This is such a gift!

A Mary & Martha Home

I saw this beautiful print on Instagram one day, framed in someone else’s dining or living room area, and I fell in love. I had to have it, not just for its beauty, but also for its message.

They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. Acts 2:46

Hospitality has been stirring in my heart for months now. Before we moved, I used to love have people in our home, no matter how small it was or how crowded we were. Then a third baby, a move to another city, and residency happened and well, opening my home didn’t happen as much.

My heart is yearning for a new season of opening my heart and home to friends and family. I don’t know what that physically looks like because I’m focusing on the heart right now. God is using the current She Reads Truth study to do a WORK in me regarding the heart of hospitality before I take the steps to act on it. I’m so thankful.

Mary & Martha Tea Towel

And it turns out that beautiful print was not a print at all. It was a tea towel that had been framed and that tea towel was from Mary & Martha, a part of the DaySpring family focused on beautiful items that promote the true heart of hospitality in our homes!

Mary & Martha Home

I pretty much love everything on their site, but this tea towel is the one item that won my heart. Instead of framing mine, I stretched it over a 20×24 canvas and put it up above the cabinets in my kitchen, the place where we all spend most of our time! I wanted Acts 2:46 in that space not only as a reminder of the hospitality God invites us to extend, but also as a call to myself to serve my own family and enjoy fellowship as much with them as I would with any guests in our home. Did I mention the Acts 2:46 tea towel is only $22?!

Many more Mary & Martha items are on my wishlist, including the Giant Ampersand {for my mantel} the sweet Honey Jar, and the gorgeous Praise Tray! Mary & Martha invites us to live in the “and” – a life that is part Mary and part Martha, as our lives can never be just one or the other. I love this heart so much and the products all reflect this lifestyle!

Giant Ampersand Honey Jar Praise Tray

I’m hosting an online Mary & Martha party this week with my local friend + Mary & Martha representative, Alice. You don’t have to RSVP. You don’t have to go anywhere. You don’t even have to change out of your pajamas. You can shop for your home or for gifts just by following this link!

Mary & Marth Special

During this party, when you spend $100, you can get ANY item in the fall or seasonal guide for 50% off! So you could spend $100 on gifts for Christmas and then get the Giant Ampersand for 50% off! It does not have to be an item of lesser value! What a GREAT special!

This party will close Monday, November 17th, so orders will process in time for you to give these beautiful gifts for Christmas! Please feel free to email me at homewiththeboys at gmail dot com if you have any questions at all!

Which Mary & Martha items are you loving for home or for gifts?
