Boy Mom BlogHop 2012!

Hello fellow boy mamas and welcome from the Boy Mom BlogHop 2012! So glad you popped your head in over here at our home!

Let me tell you a little bit about my life at home with the boys…

I am Erin…

daughter of the King, wife of a doctor, mother to three boys, homeschool teacher, lover of creating with my hands {cooking, crafting, crocheting}, HUGE sports fan {especially football!}, and extrovert extraordinaire!

The Hubby and I have been married for nine years…

Here we are in May the day we moved out of our first house. The Hubby is a first year internal medicine resident, so we are adjusting to life as a doctor’s family now! I am incredibly proud of him! He is my best friend, a wonderful dad to our boys, and a hottie 🙂

These are our peeps…I mean precious boys 🙂

Little J is four, Double J is four months, and Big J is six!

Oh my, the energy that comes along with three boys! Being a boy mom is like nothing I ever imagined, but also completely wonderful and stretching for me!

Big J is loving and compassionate, and a firstborn natural leader. Little J is fearless and hilarious. Double J is so happy and starting to roll all over the place. And all three seem to be very strong-willed. No idea where that came from…

The MOB Society idea originated right here at Home with the Boys back in April of 2010! My dear friend Brooke and I connected through those origins and started the site and community together. God has taken it from there and done INCREDIBLE things! I feel so encouraged by the writers and readers every day!

This blog is about a little of everything – faith, family, fun, food, fashion, homeschool, and more! I’m passionate about homemaking as my job. I’m trying to pray more for my boys. We’re starting our second year of homeschool this year {even though as a former public school music teacher I said I would NEVER homeschool!}. I love sharing about resources we love and even have some fun giveaways now and then! You can subscribe by email here to get these posts sent right to your inbox!

And speaking of sharing things we love, the boys are big game fans so we have quite a few around the house!

Here are some of our favorite games…

*Rush Hour Jr. – Recommended for 6-8 year olds, even Little J enjoys trying this logic game where you must move cars backward and forward ONLY to try to get the ice cream truck out of a rush hour traffic jam! Includes 40 cards with challenges of varying difficulty.

*Alphabet, Math, and Spanish Bingo Games – These were in the Target dollar aisle and the boys ask to play them daily!

*Star Wars Trouble – Trouble + Star Wars = BIG hit with our boys. The little R2D2 in the pop bubble even makes little robot noises!

*Ring Toss or Bean Bag Toss – The boys are loving these outdoor games and you can get them fairly inexpensively at Target!

*Hisss Card Game – Color matching and snake building make this a great game for boys 3 and up! Complete a snake with a head and tail and you win those cards!

*Sponge Ball Fights – A GREAT alternative to water balloon fights because there are NO pieces to pick up and not balloons to fill with water!

Thanks so much for stopping by our little home! I look forward to connecting with more boy moms and hope you’ll come back again soon!

The MOB Society is Brand New!

Any other boy moms out there?!

Oh good! I’m not alone!

Well, I just wanted to let you know that The MOB Society, a site I founded with Brooke almost two years ago for moms of boys, by moms of boys, got a facelift and we’re throwing a big party all week long!

Mothers of Boys

Our focus at The MOB Society is to encourage moms in reaching the hearts of their boys for the Gospel & preparing a generation of men to love the Lord.

We have an amazing team of writers, mothers of boys of all ages, sharing each day, and if you are a boy mom, you will love reading what they have to say. I know I do!

You can find out all the fun details of this relaunch week on the site today, but I wanted to make sure you knew about the Twitter party going on tonight, 8:00 to 9:00 p.m. CST, using the hashtag #mobsociety. You’ll get to chat with lots of other boy moms AND there are tons of prizes to be won!

We’re also celebrating a brand new ebook written by the MOB Society writers that will go on sale tomorrow {February 7th}! From Mom’s Failure to God’s Grace: Stories of Raising Boys from the MOB Society will be just $2.99 for Amazon Kindle!

Oh, this is just the tip of the iceberg, so I’ll let you head over to the site to see all the new things we have in store for boy moms! I think you’ll love it 🙂

If you ARE one of my fellow boy moms, won’t you introduce yourself and share the ages of your boys here as well?

Deck the Halls!

This was one of the first years we were able to get to work decorating for the happiest of holidays the very next day after Thanksgiving! Last year, the stomach bug prevented it. In years past, we’ve been travelling.

But this year, we were home and healthy and I couldn’t have been happier!

Oh wait, yes I could – the Huskers were playing football while we decorated. BONUS!

And we had some happy helpers this year…

Big J was eager to help Daddy move boxes in from the attic!

The much beloved Charlie Brown Christmas characters made their return. {Linus reciting the Christmas story is one of my favorite things in any Christmas movie!}

The boys supervising Daddy’s work 🙂

A mischievous look, but a good little helper!

And then it was ornament time! These little hands were itching to hang up ornaments!

They did such a nice job {with a little help at the top from us} and we were able to relax with a beautifully decorated tree for the rest of the day…

It is such a delight to have these handsome men helping out and SO excited for Christmas!

24 days…let the countdown begin!

Have you started decorating yet?!

Ooh! And we’re starting Truth in the Tinsel: An Advent Experience for Little Hands today! I’m not sure who is more excited – the kids or me! Have you checked it out yet?! {You can read my review here!}

And you should know, from here on out, I’ll be bragging on these boys of ours every Thursday and joining the “Let’s Hear It For the Boys” link up at The MOB Society! If you have boys, head on over there to share your own post about just how awesome your boys are! We’re rejoicing together in the blessings of raising boys!

On Having Another Boy

Just a few weeks ago, we found out we will be having our third boy around the end of February.

Amongst the congratulations, I have heard more than a few times, “You didn’t get your girl? Guess you’ll have to keep trying!”

Can I let you in on a little secret?

We weren’t “trying” for a girl.

We didn’t decide to have a third child so we could “get our girl” as many people have put it.

We wanted a third CHILD – whatever the Lord decided to bless us with.

And, when it came to the reveal, we both felt OVERJOYED to be having another boy!

Now, don’t read this as me thinking girls are horrible or that I never would have wanted a girl – having a girl would have been lovely! Raising boys is exhausting, confusing, and SO different from my life as a girl growing up.

But I would not trade these boys {and the one kicking away in my womb} for anything – raising godly men is an awesome responsibility and blessing.

One of the nicest messages I received in the middle of all the well wishes read something like this…

“Congrats on boy #3! God must know what a wonderful boy mom you are!”

Well, that message just made my year.

Big J was hoping for a little sister, but by the evening after we found out, he was celebrating the fact our house of boys would be growing.

I’ve heard lots of macho cries in the house since then…

“Why are we excited to have another boy?”

“Cause we’re THE BOYS!”

But I’ve also gotten a lot of this…

“Mommy, you can be our princess!”

I’ll take that any day.

And I’ll take another boy in the house any day, too.

My Shining Moment This Week

Yesterday, Big J walked up to me holding a brand new pair of underwear.

New underwear is a big deal with these boys. BIG deal. And yes, I’m talking about underwear.

Anyways, he wanted to know which Transformers character was on said underwear.

I took a look and narrowed it down to two characters.

“It looks like Ironhide or Sideswipe,” I said standing in the hallway outside the bathroom.

I turned to walk into the bathroom and saw the hubby beaming at me.

“That IS Ironhide. My wife KNOWS her Transformers characters. That is awesome.”

It felt like a rite of passage for me – I AM a boy mom and I embrace it with all that I am.

I even know my Transformers characters.

My shining moment of the week. What was yours?

Are you a boy mom? There are a whole lot of moms just like you gathering at The MOB Society today and linking up their posts about growing godly men. Take a peek when you get a chance!}\

Boy Mom Blog Hop 2011!

I love a good party and today the MOB Society is hosting a super one fun – the first annual Boy Mom Blog Hop!

If you’re visiting from the party {or anywhere else!} then WELCOME!!!

I’m Erin, the founder here at Home with the Boys AND the co-founder and creator of the MOB Society!

Here at Home with the Boys, I blog about lots of things, but mainly family, faith and even a little fashion! This blog follows our life and we are on a wild, but awesome, ride with the Lord guiding us every step of the way! He is SO good!

In addition to being one of the women behind the MOB with the beautiful and talented Brooke, I also write for The Homeschool Village and as a Tommy Mommy for Tommy Nelson!

Let me tell you just a little bit about the fam!

I have been married to this handsome man for eight years…

And he just started his fourth year of medical school! Just over nine months until that M.D. is added behind his name – so proud of him!

We have two little men, the whole reason behind the MOB Society in the first place…

Little J is three – fearless, funny and full of energy! Some days, this boy scares me to death, but his dimples melt my heart in about two seconds flat!

Big J is five – so caring, creative and crazy! We will be starting homeschool this Monday and he is SO excited! He is an avid reader already, which leads me to the next part of this blog hop…

A few of our favorite books!

We have LOTS of books. LOTS. But there are few the boys always go back to night after night…

The Jesus Storybook Bible {We all fell in love with this leading up to Christmas, and now Big J can read it to US!}

The Gruffalo {both boys LOVE this, especially when read in a British accent!}

Llama Llama Red Pajama {Little J would listen to this every night and the other Llama Llama books as well!}

Snuggle Puppy {I sing this to Little J and he gives hugs and kisses during it. Perfection.}

I’m sure I’ll think of lots more, but I know these are the favorites when they are the first things to pop into my head!

Thanks for stopping by and make sure you say hi! Have fun boy mom blog hopping all week long!

Discovering My Mission…

I wrote about my Top Ten Books to Read in 2011 a few weeks back and I thought this week would be a great time to share some of my thoughts on the books I have read and am reading right now.

Yesterday was One Thousand Gifts.

Today, over at the MOB Society, I’m sharing the life change coming out of reading the The Mission of Motherhood.

And it’s all based around this AMAZING quote from the lovely Mrs. Sally Clarkson…

“As it is, after eighteen years of learning the truth of living sacrificially, I have found that embracing God’s call to motherhood once and for all has brought me great peace. Instead of seeing fusses and messes as irritations in my day, for instance, I am more likely to see them as opportunities to train my children to be peacemakers and to learn to be responsible for their own messes. Instead of resenting the interruptions in my schedule, I am more likely to accept them as divine appointments. More and more, I have learned to see my children through the eyes of God and to accept the stages of growth through which he has designed them to grow.”

You can read more about how her book is helping me discover my real mission in life over at the MOB today!

A little hint: it has to do with these two…

What quotes have helped you discover your mission in life?
