For several reasons, I’ve been trying to modify the way I snack lately. No, I’m not dieting (I REALLY do not like that word), but we are trying to eat healthier in a way that is sustainable. {Sustainable meaning I don’t want to face plant in the middle of a chocolate cake at some point because I’ve completely deprived myself. You know what I mean.}
So in an effort to encourage you – and maybe get more ideas from you, please?! – today I’m sharing…
My Top Ten Current Favorite Healthier Snacks
{could that title BE any longer?!}
1. Popcorn – My all-time favorite snack. Maybe even my all-time favorite food. Popcorn can be really good for you or really bad for you. My favorite way to cook it right now is on the stove in coconut oil. If you’ve never tried it that way, give it a shot! I don’t even miss the butter!
2. Dried Apples and Cinnamon-Roasted Almonds – Why have I not eaten this as a snack before?! They are absolutely delicious together!
3. Chips and Salsa – A close second behind popcorn as my favorite snack, I love the crunch and the spice! Right now, it’s Baked Tostitos and Trader Joe’s Chunky Salsa for me. I just have to be careful how much I eat!
4. Texas Caviar – A great way to add some protein to my normal chips and salsa snack! There are lots of variations out there – just do a little searching for one that suits your tastes!
5. Frozen Yogurt – But probably not the kind you’re thinking. I just put the containers of Yoplait Whips in the freezer! Yummy!
6. Apples and Nut Butter – Another snack that I don’t know why I haven’t been eating it all along! Of course, natural peanut butter is the cheapest option of the nut butters, but I also enjoy almond butter as well!
7. Homemade Granola – I make mine with dried pineapple and craisins. Tastes fabulous as cereal too!
8. Real Fruit “Ice Cream” – We had this the other night with raspberries and mango. Refreshing and no extra sugar! I need to try some other combos now!
9. High Protein Peanut Butter Balls – These are not low in fat, but they are still good for you! I like to grab one after I workout or for “dessert” after lunch. Just enough sweet to tide me over for awhile!
10. Berry Banana Smoothie – Smoothies are great in general, but I really enjoy this one and it’s a little different! The recipe is from the book The Daniel Fast by Susan Gregory – hope you enjoy! {I promise you can’t taste the spinach at all!}
Ingredients
*1 ripe banana, broken into chunks
*1 cup frozen blueberries
*1 cup unsweetened almond, rice, or soy milk
*1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
*1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional – but I highly recommend!)
*1/2 cup fresh or frozen spinach (optional)
*2-3 ice cubes, as needed
Directions
Place the banana, blueberries, almond milk, flaxseed, cinnamon and spinach (if desired) in a blender; blend until smooth.
Add ice to reach desired consistency and serve cold.
Makes 1 serving.
