April is National Honesty Month. Honesty is such an important virtue to teach our children, but it is also important for us to be honest with them. And our honesty about our own struggles can be life-giving to them. You can read more about how I chose to be honest with my children about my battle with lying over at the Tommy Nelson blog today.
And as we try to establish these important character traits early on, I am so thankful for the resources being provided by companies like Tommy Nelson to help us get these messages through in fun and engaging ways!
This month, we had the privilege of viewing two fun DVDs from Tommy Nelson that the boys and I just loved!
I Will Tell the Truth is a collection of two classic Hermie episodes emphasizing the importance of honesty and the words we say. We love the Hermie books and movies here! The episode, “Flo the Lyin’ Fly,” was especially impacting to the kids and I. The story is similar to the Boy Who Cried Wolf, and we had a great discussion about how we build a reputation through our words, whether they are true or lies. Flo had gained a reputation as a liar so no one would believe her when she DID finally tell the truth. What a hard lesson to learn and the boys were really upset that no one would believe Flo – so many great conversations can come out of this DVD!
We also greatly enjoyed Cocka Doodle Doo the Right Thing, a fabulous story about the Golden Rule set on a farm! This DVD features the voice talents of two singers I adore, Amy Grant and Vince Gill, and the cast of characters is such fun! Hercules the Rooster is at the center of the story as a full-of-himself rooster who thinks he is too important to help clean up around the farm. Hercules treats those around him quite rudely as the day goes on, but Hercules is the one who gets an unpleasant surprise at the end of the day because of his bad attitude! In addition to a great lesson, there is also fun music and lots of laughs!
You can win a set of these two great Tommy Nelson DVDs right here, right now!
*I received these DVDs to review as a Tommy Mommy. I was not compensated in any other way for this post and all opinions are 100% my own!
Erin, these look like AMAZING DVDs. They would be perfect for my boys!
What timing! My 6yo daughter has suddenly started spinning some interesting lines in the last week or so and she’ll say “i’m not lying”… so I’m looking for ways to help explain lying and understand where she is coming from. A dvd like this would be a great tool!
thank you!
I seek out lessons to help me teach honesty to my boys. Whenever one of our boys tells a lie, we really take the time to talk about it and then pray, asking Jesus for forgiveness.
We talk about what the Bible says about lying, but we also teach our son that when he lies, it makes it hard to trust.
These look like great DVD’s
Honesty is very important, we talk to the kids about it a lot and tell them that lying is a sin.
Our girls are only 2 and 3 so it is hard to get the idea of honesty across to them, but we still try.
My LOs are small, but we talk about honest and how it makes Jesus and Mom and Dad happy when they are truthful.
We have taught our children to be honest from a very young age. My boys know that they always tell the truth even when they’ve done something wrong. They might still get in trouble but they know the punishment will be a lot better if they tell the truth first.
We talk about honesty on a daily basis because my 4 and 5 year old are at the age where they can easily lie and not fully think about their actions. My husband and I try to model honesty to them because I think that’s the most important thing!
These dvds would be wonderful to use in my children’s ministry!!
Honesty is something my nine year old is struggling with and something my two year old is just starting to learn about. We have a five minute devotional about telling the truth that we do several times a week but this has been a big problem for us. We could really use a new approach.
This is a tough subject. We try to teach by example and reinforce positive behavior.
thanks for the chance to win these DVDs.
We’ve just started to experience our 4 year old lying. I’m not sure how to explain to her the importance of not telling lies. I think this would help a lot. Thanks for the chance to win them!
We talk about how God wants us to be honest with each other and him.
ONE OF MY BOYS HAS A REAL HABIT OF LYING….SO WE REPEAT proverbs 12:22
Our children are adopted and are often scared to be truthful when they’ve done something wrong. I emphasize that they need to be honest because it builds trust. I also remind them that as Christians we need to tell the truth and they won’t get in trouble. Our youngest two are slowly getting out of tattling as I ask them oh are you about to tell me about how it could have hurt you or them, etc.
