I love to read, but somewhere between babies and moving and homeschool and LIFE happening, I lost that love. Mainly due to lack of time – or just quiet time to concentrate on a book – but it was just gone. I couldn’t finish a book to save my life.
My love came back in the last month and the biggest reason for that is the Kindle app.
Oh, praise the Lord for that wonderful app right there in the middle on my iPhone and iPad.
I still love good old paper-and-ink books – there really is no substitue – but they present a few problems for me:
1. They take up space. A lot of space. During our move I realized just how many books we had accumulated AND how heavy they are to move!
2. You can really only take one with you at a time. Again, books get heavy. It’s ridiculous how many different reading options I like to take on vacation. Carrying four or five books doesn’t leave much room in a carry-on…
3. You have to wait to get hard copies. I don’t frequent book stores because I have three children. Three children and browsing through thousands of books do NOT go hand-in-hand. So, if I want the hard copy of a book, I usually order it on Amazon. And then I have to wait for it to arrive. And I’m impatient. First world problems, I know.
As you can imagine, my reasons for loving the Kindle app are the exact opposite of the three listed above…
1. Kindle books take up no space in my house.
2. Kindle books are not heavy to carry.
3. Kindle books can be in my hands in five seconds or less.
But there are even more reasons for my ebook devotion…
4. I can read books on my Kindle app while feeding the baby in the middle of the night without turning on a light!
5. I can read books while I run on the treadmill. Several people have said this just does not work for them, but reading has been the best thing to keep my mind focused while I run! Fiction is the best because it pulls you into the story, but I also read 7 on the treadmill with equal success and enjoyment!
6. Over half of the books I have on my Kindle app have been free. FREE, I tell you. There are always one-day specials, temporary price cuts, and all sorts of other deals on ebooks. If they weren’t free, they were much cheaper than the hard copies in most cases!
I’m sure I could think of many more reasons to love this app, but this is a good start!
If you didn’t know, there is a free Kindle app for Android, iPhone, Windows Phone 7, iPad, Mac, and PC! And, if you read a book on one device and then want to pick it up on another later, the app will sync to your furthest read location! Love that!
I’m really not selling anything here because the Kindle app is free. I’m just very thankful that my desire to read has been restored. I can’t get enough time to read in a day any more. I’ve become very word hungry and I love it!
Earlier this year, I read the all of The Hunger Games Trilogy on my Kindle app. It was so awesome. No waiting for the next book to be available at the library!
In just the past month I’ve read the following on my Kindle app…
Chasing Mona Lisa: A Novel by Tricia Goyer
7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess by Jen Hatmaker
Glamorous Illusions: A Novel by Lisa T. Bergren
And now I’m reading:
Run Like a Mother: How to Get Moving–and Not Lose Your Family, Job, or Sanity
PLUS, I’ve picked up lots of great free classics to read to the boys and other homeschool resources!
I’ll stop gushing now. Just go get the app if you don’t have it already. You can thank me in the comments {and ask any questions you might have as well}.
I’m off to do more reading…

YOU just spoke to me…:)
I have been the same–keep starting books and never finishing, as they lay lifeless on my bedside table! I think you have a great solution!
Thanks for that, and you take care–
Love it, Erin! And thanks for tweeting my post too!! 🙂
I love my kindle app as well! Love that you can highlight things….take notes…etc! I do still appreciate hard covers w some type of books though.
I have a NOOK, and read it faithfully at the beginning of the year, then I went back to real books, but I am moving back to the Nook. I hear ya, the benefits are awesome, but I love doing my Bible study in a real book, I had a hard time with my Nook. Happy reading!
Ok, so more and more I’m wishing I had some sort of portable device with which I could read where ever. Maybe I could put it on my laptop but that wouldn’t work so well at the gym! 😉 But maybe I could at least get some good homeschool books that way. I’ve downloaded a bunch of e-books from a hs site I like but have never read them. It just seems awkward on the laptop. I might just have to expand my Christmas wish list.
