I have limits and that might be one of the most im I have limits and that might be one of the most important things I’ve learned to recognize in the last year. It doesn’t mean I’m weak or less than. It means I am human and aware. And when I know those limits AND know how to step back to recover, I am being SMART.

I have limits in so many areas: mentally, physically, emotionally. And when I get close to (or go over) those limits, there are warning signs...
•tension in my shoulders, neck, jaw
•not sleeping well
•highly distractible
•easily irritated
•being obsessively “busy” but not productive

Your warning signs may look the same or different, but it is important to know them and catch them early - for your health and well-being and for those you love.

What do you do when you recognize those warning signs? A few ways I’ve learned to pull back and recover...
•unplug from social media
•drink more water and less caffeine
•have some alone time (yes, even this extrovert needs it!)
•pray and refocus on the present, gratitude, joy, hope
•restorative yoga (most relaxing thing ever)
•read a book
•go for a slow walk/hike
•paint, draw, doodle
•listen to music that brings you joy

I could go on and on because the last year has given me LOTS of reasons to need recovery time. Anytime I tried to push through the warning signs and just keep going, I made myself and everyone around me more miserable. Let’s not be like that, ok?

Knowing your limits AND taking time to recover when you’ve blown past them is a gift to yourself, so take some time today to make two lists:
1. Warning signs that something is too much
2. Ways to recover that work for you

Yesterday, I saw the flashing lights of several of my warning signs, so I made a plan of recovery for today. I already feel the tension melting away. And I’ll be mostly unplugged the rest of the day to continue the process.

Know your limits and take care of yourselves, friends. You are loved. 💚

I will always remember today as the first inaugura I will always remember today as the first inauguration where all three of these guys understood what was happening, paid attention, asked questions, made thoughtful observations, and even opened my eyes to some new things.

When they were really young, it was hard for me to even know what was happening in politics and around the world because I was so tired and busy and just trying to keep them alive. It’s such a wonder to be where we are now, discussing government and history and character and ALL THE THINGS.

I know we as parents are growing and learning right alongside them because the growing and learning should NEVER stop. What a joy to be on this growing and learning journey together! (swipe for a DC throwback pic 🇺🇸)

To quote @amandascgorman, my favorite voice of the day:
“And so we lift our gaze, not to what stands between us, but what stands before us.
We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside.
We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another.
We seek harm to none and harmony for all.”

Let it be so, Lord. 🙏🏻
