The seasons are changing and I get all giddy about switching out my clothes to jeans and sweaters and boots and everything fall. I love reading about all the new fashion trends and seeing how I can make them work for me.
But let’s face it: trying to keep up with every fashion trend is not only exhausting, but also expensive. And every trend is not for every person.
Last week, we talked about sticking to a smaller closet to make getting dressed less stressful. Basic pieces are a must, but it’s also fun to spice them up with something trendy. Notice I didn’t say “all things trendy.” Just a few things each season.
Let’s take a look at a few of this fall’s fashion trends according to the fashion industry…
Starting at the top left, we have black + white. I think we can all probably swing that trend with things in our closet, right? Black + white is an example of an easy, inexpensive, doable trend for every woman!
Going clockwise, we have the military jacket. Military and moto jackets are super hip, but can be expensive to buy and tricky to wear. All of the items in this collage are from Old Navy, so they are relatively inexpensive, but with something this trendy, I tend to want to spend even less in case it goes back out of style quickly! I picked up an olive green military jacket at our local Goodwill a month ago for $1! You have to be willing to look, but thrift stores can be a great way to add super trendy items to your wardrobe without spending a fortune!
Colored jeans are one of my favorite trends because they go well with the basics we talked about last week – denim shirts, black/white/gray v-necks, while button downs, and more! I picked burgundy for this collage because it adds color without being too bold. And on the note of not spending too much, I got a pair or leggings/jeggings in this color at Wal-Mart that are really comfy! Just wear a longer shirt with them!
Animal print. Sometimes I love it. Sometimes I don’t. If you don’t like a trend, don’t force it into your wardrobe just because it is in style! Little J loves when I wear my leopard print shoes and scarf and I had a really cute zebra tank when I was pregnant, but that’s about the extent of animal print in my wardrobe!
And then there is camouflage. It is all the rage this year. My love for Duck Dynasty has softened me to camo a little bit, but not enough to add it to my closet…yet. We’ll see.
I did cave and give ankle booties a try this year, but only because I got some in the perfect color on a REALLY good sale at Old Navy. They are almost identical to the ones in this picture and I really love the way they look! This would be a trend I fought for a long time, but with a low price, I gave it a try and loved it!
Last but not least, there is the floral trend. I picked this shirt because it is emerald which is also hot for fall. I love the green, but I’m not crazy about the floral. Maybe flowers are your cup of tea, but they just aren’t mine right now, so I’m not running out to stock my closet with this trend. And I’m ok with that.
Sure, it is fun to try on new things and mix up your wardrobe with new trends, but if you don’t like it, don’t force it. If you don’t like the way it looks on you, don’t buy it. Pick a few trendy pieces that reflect your personality and find an inexpensive way to add them to your closet. And if even that stresses you out, just stick to the classics. You can never go wrong there!
