3 Ways to Wear Short Western Boots

It’s time for another installation of my collaboration with Shannon from The Simple Moms! She is a fellow fashion lover, but she is a mom to four girls and, as you know, I’m a mom to three boys! We thought it would be fun to show you how we view style from two different perspectives – a girl mom and a boy mom. Be sure to check out her fabulous post today as well!

I received these boots to review. I was not compensated in any way for this post and all opinions are 100% my own.

Mom Stylin'

Shannon and I are back with our first style feature of 2016 and it is a fabulous one!

I stumbled across Tecovas Boots on Twitter a few weeks ago. Being a boot lover, I was immediately interested and it took me about two seconds flat to know I needed a pair!

What makes Tecovas so unique?

Tecovas is the first western boot brand dedicated to selling top-quality, handmade boots at honest prices by only selling them directly to customers. I can tell you this: I have shopped high quality leather western boots in the past and the prices are way up there. Tecovas has brought those sky-high prices down with their approach!

IMG_2364

Tecovas also focused on three things in their extensive development process: comfortable fit, custom leather, and classic style. They want their boots to be the most comfortable boots you’ve ever worn and I think they nailed it!

There are two Tecovas styles for women. The Jamie is your traditional cowgirl height and the Penny is a shorter western boot. Both are available in Bourbon, Midnight, and Desert. I have been wearing my Midnight Penny boots every chance I get because they are so stylish and comfortable!

Here’s a few ideas of how to style your short western boots:

3 Ways to Wear Short Western Boots

Everyday Comfort

Tecovas Comfy Outfit

Yes, it is cold here in Nebraska. I am living in warm clothes, like this sweater tunic and skinny jeans. A comfy outfit is pulled together quickly with the Penny boots which work perfectly with tucked in skinny jeans or leggings!

Coffee Date or Girls’ Night Out

Tecovas Girls' Night

This is what I would wear if I was meeting someone for coffee at Stories Coffeehouse (my favorite in town) or going out for Mexican with my girlfriends! I’m late to these style trends, but I’m digging ponchos and big floppy hats now! Better late than never, right? Instead of tucking my skinny jeans in, I cuffed them above the short boots. This will be a great option for spring when the windchill isn’t below zero like it is at this moment!

Date Night

Tecovas Date Night

Date nights are my fave. I like to get dressed up for date night. Faux leather leggings are a super fun date night option! They pair like a dream with a sweater dress and the Penny boots! I can’t wait to try them with a few fun, flirty dresses for spring date nights.

You’re in love with Tecovas Boots now, aren’t you?! Shannon shared her styling for the Penny boots today, so check out her post!

We adore this new company and they want to bless one of you with a $100 gift card for your own pair of boots! Head on over to Instagram to find out how to enter!

Swooping in here to share a quick What I Wore post for this Wednesday! If you follow me on Instagram, you probably see my outfit posts before they show up here, but I like to have them all in one place! I look forward to Wednesday all week!

Here’s a week of what I wore, starting with a fun discount from one of my very favorite mom-owned shops!

Rainy day at home: hoodie – Evy’s Tree, tee – Target, jeans – Maurice’s, shoes – Sperrys, hat – The Berry Patch Boutique

This outfit just screams fall to me. It was the perfect early autumn ensemble, with layers to take off when the day got warmer and cute flats. It was a humid day and I didn’t want to dry my hair, so braids + a great hat to the rescue!

IMG_0334

The hat was made by my dear friend, Renee, who owns The Berry Patch Boutique. Everything she makes is adorable and she is always working on custom orders! This trucker hat could be made with any state! I’m all about the distressed look + leopard print. LOVE.

I have more to share from The Berry Patch Boutique coming up, but go look around now and use the code HWTBFREESHIP to get free shipping on your order! You can order from her shop or send her a message on her Facebook page to discuss a custom order! Just remember to tell her you have the HWTBFREESHIP code when you order!

And now to the rest of the week…

Yesterday it “dipped” into the upper 70s for a high and it was just enough to give me hope that fall is just around the corner! But we still had plenty of highs in the 90s over the past week, so my outfits were a little all over the place, from tank top + shorts to jeans + long sleeves!

Here is what I wore this week…

IMG_9980

I learned my lesson early: a hot day at the zoo means hair up and cool clothes. I’m still loving this “Be Strong and Courageous” tank from Zoe Clothing Company from last summer and I’m happy to say it’s still available! Polka dots are the best.

IMG_9994

This is my excited look because my “Mothers of Boys” shirt from The MOB Society fundraiser showed up this week! Isn’t it super cute?! My oldest boy told me I needed to get pink so I listened and I love it. We’ll be doing more t-shirt designs in the future, so stay tuned!

The tee is even better when paired with the Josie bomber from Evy’s Tree. Warning: you’ll see that bomber again in this post. And the jeans + boots are from Noelle Mae Boutique! Don’t forget, you can still get 15% off your NMB order through tonight (Wednesday) at midnight CST with the code HOMEBLOG at checkout!

IMG_0009

Another summery day, another summery outfit: Banana Republic outlet tank + a skirt I found at my local grocery store for just $10 (seriously!) + Saltwater Sandals. I wasn’t so sure about the skirt length at first, but it’s amazingly comfortable and I think it will look adorable with cowboy boots + a denim jacket this fall!

IMG_0028

I told you you’d see that bomber again! That’s because I’m totally falling in love with lace and this bomber is just the perfect amount for any outfit. I wore it to church with this $9 Target clearance maxi dress, a necklace from Kohl’s from YEARS ago, and Clarks wedge sandals. I’ll be wearing all of this together again!

IMG_0057

And yesterday, at last, fall started to peak through. I’m embracing the fall transition with distressed jeans (same from NMB above – use HOMEBLOG for 15% off), ankle boots (less than $20 on Amazon!), and the fall colors in this Elegantees tee + Starfish Project necklace! Also, lace top extenders are the best fashion invention ever. Jaime gets in different top and dress extenders in all the time over at Noelle Mae Boutique, so keep an eye out for some to try!

I can’t decide which fall clothes I’m most excited to wear! Hoodies, jeans, boots, scarves…happy sigh…

What are you looking forward to wearing this fall?

People have asked me before how I would describe my style. That’s hard to do because I don’t really have one style. I think this is partially why I couldn’t stick to capsule wardrobe. I like to mix it up, dress to match my mood, not be held to a certain way of dressing on a regular basis.

I do know one thing: I like to be comfortable. High heels and I have never really gotten along. If the clothing is too tight to move, I’m not wearing it. Hot weather means you’ll find me in tanks, shorts, and sun dresses. Cool weather means I’ll be layering, probably with a cute hoodie on top.

Thankfully this week, we had some hot AND some cool weather, so I wore both tanks and jeans. And it was all super comfy. Here’s what I wore this week…

What I Wore 8-5 2

We headed to zoo for Member Appreciation Day last Wednesday and it was hot and humid. The last time we had gone to the zoo, I wore my hair down and regretted it the whole time. Hot, sticky mess. I wasn’t making that mistake twice, so I searched easy braid tutorials on Pinterest and came up with these milkmaid braids. The braids stayed in place, kept me cool, and I LOVED the way they looked! A Pinterest hair win for once!

The tank was a fun purchase with Zulily credit – it’s my favorite color and I have a slight obsession with pineapples, so it was perfect! I added this Work of Worth necklace for some extra color and wore my favorite Paisley + Sparrow earrings that I wear multiple times a week.

What I Wore 8-5 1

We spent the weekend at my parents’ house and, while I have plenty of pictures from the weekend, I failed to capture any of my outfits. Whoops. BUT while we were away I had the super fun privilege of meeting Jaime, owner of Noelle Mae Boutique, and sorting through her fabulous racks of clothing! I came away with several cute things to show you, but let’s start here with the Wifey tee and Kan Can jeans. The tee is amazingly soft, the kind I want to pull on every day. It made The Hubby smile big when he came home from taking his boards to see me wearing this shirt! The Wifey tee runs a little small, so keep that in mind when ordering! I usually wear a XS or S shirt and this is a M.

Now, can we talk about the jeans? I’ve been on the hunt for my first pair of distressed jeans and the selection has been greatly disappointing. I don’t need anybody but my husband seeing my underwear. I haven’t really loved any boyfriend jeans I’ve tried on either. Jaime talked me into trying a pair of Kan Can jeans in the Boyfriend Distressed II style. THEY ARE FABULOUS. They are cute, comfy, just the wash I was looking for, and the BEST PART – there are patches behind the distressing so no unwanted underwear or skin showing through! Bonus: The Hubby thinks they are “pretty hot.” His words. A note on sizing: these jeans run big, so you’ll want to size down. I’m usually a 4 or so in jeans and these are the 1/24″ size!

If you’re looking to order the tee or jeans, you’ll want to click here to get 10% off your first order of $25 or more from Noelle Mae Boutique! This is just the beginning of all the fun pieces I’ll be showing you from her mom-owned shop!

What I Wore 8-5 3

Last but not least, we had a wonderfully rainy and cooler day yesterday. I was actually wearing a hoodie and jeans much of the day. It was heaven. The sun peeked through the clouds late in the afternoon, so I ditched the hoodie, but it was just perfect to stick with jeans! The jeans, hat, and tee are all from Target – go figure. The tee is my favorite Target tee – I have it in four colors because I like the material and it can be dressed up or down easily.

I completed the outfit with gold accessories: the Aztec Chevron Necklace from Beautiful & Beloved (use code “empower” to get 15% off), the Tory bracelet for my Fitbit from Funktional Wearables, and these marvelous Sperrys with some fun gold accents. I’d love some more days like today to wear outfits like this!

What are your thoughts on your own personal style? Do you have “a style?” If so, what would you call it? Or are you more like me – go with the flow when it comes to fashion?

Fourth of July Outfits!

Who’s ready for the Fourth of July weekend?!

I’m totally ready – time with family, a day at the lake, celebrating our country, the food – it’s all good. I also love the fun Fourth of July outfit options. Red, white, and blue can be mixed together in so many different ways. Whether your holiday celebrations are at the lake, a backyard party, or anywhere else, I have some ideas for how to style your patriotic colors!

4th of July Outfit 1

A navy striped dress is a great staple to have in your summer closet and you’ve already got the blue and white covered for your Fourth of July outfit! Add some red beads and white slip-ons like these from Bzees to keep this classy outfit both dressy and comfy. I’m always a big fan of completing a summer outfit with a fedora.

4th of July Outfit 2

This is my lake Fourth of July outfit – a great patriotic tank, neutral shorts, comfy shoes and simple accessories. Lake days are all about being able to move and be comfortable not matter how hot it may be. We’ve been going to the same lake every Fourth of July since I can remember and this type of outfit has never failed me – why change now?! Did you notice the shape of the flag? So fun.

4th of July Outfit 3

If I was spending the Fourth of July at a backyard party or restaurant with friends, this would be my outfit of choice. I love the long, bold graphic tank paired with classy white capris and the best wedges ever. I really should wear white pants more, but hello, mother of three boys! Actually, I’m the one who usually spills on them…

4th of July Outfit 4

One of my favorite parts of the Fourth of July is sitting around the campfire, making s’mores, singing, laughing and talking with my aunts, uncles, and cousins. By that time of day, we’ve changed into jeans and hoodies, partially because it has cooled off, but mostly to ward off those Minnesota mosquitoes! This year, I’m adding these amazing Mitscoots “The Mark” socks for a little extra USA flair! It’s too late to get your own pair in time for this holiday, but you’ll want to order them now anyways because they are on sale for just $10 AND you can get an extra 20% off your order with the code HWTB20 at checkout!

4th of July Style Collage

How do you wear your red, white, and blue? Which of these Fourth of July outfits fits your style and plans for the holiday?

The Capsule Wardrobe Break-Up: It’s Not You, It’s Me

Last fall, I dove head first into planning and using a capsule wardrobe. It had been something I wanted to try for a LONG time and I was so excited to finally execute my plan! I purged, I planned, I purchased intentionally, and I spent three months wearing only the 40 items in my closet. I even wrote a post called “Why I Need a Capsule Wardrobe.”

After three months, I decided the capsule wardrobe and I were just not meant for each other. So we broke up.

The Capsule Wardrobe Break-Up

To be perfectly clear: I still love the capsule wardrobe concept and I think every woman should try it at least once. But between my ENFP personality (ooh, shiny things!) and my love for trying new things in fashion, I couldn’t stick to just my 40-item capsule after those three months.

So what didn’t work?

The capsule wardrobe made me feel like I was on a diet. The Hubby and I don’t do diets well. We like to eat healthy 90% of the time, but we don’t like being told what we can and can’t eat by some plan. This is how I ended up feeling during my capsule trial period – restricted and wanting things I “couldn’t” have.

Even though I chose to not to stick with this way of dressing, the capsule wardrobe process WAS a good experience for me. I took the time to intentionally look at the clothes in my closet, eliminated the pieces I wasn’t wearing, and thought of new ways to wear the pieces I already love. I also found myself buying less on impulse which is always a good thing!

Instead of sticking to a strict capsule wardrobe, I’m just going through my wardrobe with a cutthroat mindset each season. And as far as buying, I’m shopping for better-made versions of the essentials and going with fair-trade and ethical fashion companies whenever possible.

This post is about me breaking up with my capsule wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it. You may love it. It was freeing at first to have a smaller set of pieces to choose from when getting dressed each morning. And some people thrive in this way…just not me! I’m leaving up my capsule wardrobe posts because I still believe in the resources and process. Who knows – I may give it another go for a different season at some point!

I still believe I needed a capsule wardrobe for that season as I originally posted. It helped me get creative and clarify my style. I found a few “uniforms” I love to stick to – more on that soon! It was a great exercise in discipline and intentionality, both of which I could use a lot more of in my life!

My Dear Capsule Wardrobe,

It was good while it lasted. You helped me grow, but I had to move on. I just couldn’t be me when we were together. I know someone else will love you much better than I ever could. It’s not you. It’s all me. Thanks for the memories.

All my best,

Erin

Have you tried a capsule wardrobe? How did it work for you?
